Lenten Studies Series

The Lenten Studies Series at St. Michael's Episcopal Church begins on Tuesday, February 23rd.

People of Christ’s Passion
by Ross Saunders

To fully understand the Passion, we must come to know the world in which Jesus lived. These people were Mediterraneans: Jews, Greeks, and Romans.  Because they lived in a time different from our own, they had a completely different way of understanding the world and their place in it. We need to try to get inside their heads and their hearts if we are ever to come to terms with the dynamics of the gospel. Our Sunday Lenten study, based on the book by Ross Saunders, will take us back to the last days of Jesus and examine what it meant for the disciples and others to follow him.

With a dinner provided at 6 pm, the Lenten Studies Series will begin at 6:30 and last an hour. Everyone is invited and St. Michael's will gladly provide a nursery on request. Clear your calendars on Tuesday evenings to take part in this study series!

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23
“Maybe there’s a connection between the amount of noise in our lives and our inability to hear God. If God sometimes feels distant to us, maybe it’s not because he’s not talking to us, but simply because we aren’t really listening”

TUESDAY, MARCH 2
“Do you feel like you often don’t get the things you really want? Do you feel like God’s denying you these things or maybe like he’s not even listening to you?”

TUESDAY, MARCH 9
“Maybe forgiving isn’t something you do for someone else to let them off the hook. Maybe forgiveness is about you. God didn’t create you to carry these wounds around. God created you to be free”

TUESDAY, MARCH 16
“Believing in God is important, but what about God believing in us? Believing that we can actually be the kind of people we were meant to be”

TUESDAY, MARCH 23
“Jesus doesn’t separate loving God and loving others. So maybe the best way for us to show our love for God is actually by loving other people no matter how hard it sometimes is … Maybe it’s the only way”.

Tuesday's at St. Michael's

Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth. The Father beckons us to Himself with a "furious love" that burns brightly and constantly. Only when we truly embrace God's grace can we bask in the joy of a gospel that enfolds the most needy of His flock - the "ragamuffins."

Are you bedraggled, beat-up, burnt-out?  Most of us believe in God's grace - in theory. But somehow we can't seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet.

Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we've done. We come to Him as ragamuffins--dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His "furious love."

Brennan Manning 's now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it--simple honesty--has changed thousands of lives.

Please join us on Tuesday at 10 am!!!!!

Sunday Morning
Adult Christian Education

WERE YOU THERE?
"Our Church Fathers...
Understanding Who We Are!"

Our Sunday Morning adult Christian education class will have a unique opportunity to study the Church Fathers.

"The denominations as we know them today did not just happen --- they were shaped by their pasts. An important goal in the study of the history of the Christian church is to acquire understanding of how we got where we are. Some things that loom very large and important when seen up close take on a different size and value if we stand farther off. We can see a wider horizon, and some details we may have overlooked before --- stand out clearly when the larger tapestry becomes visible. As we move from point to point through time, try to acquire the habit of asking, "How does what happened then help me understand what is happening now?'" (EFM, Yr 3, Church History 2006 Edition)
